Zerto Virtual Replication (ZVR) provides a business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR) solution in a virtual environment, enabling the replication of mission-critical applications and data as quickly as possible, the recovery time objective (RTO), and with minimal data loss, the recovery point objective (RPO). Zerto Virtual Replication enables recovery with low values for both the RTO and RPO. Zerto Virtual Replication is installed in every site with virtual machines to be protected and recovered.
Various component involved in ZVR are
1. Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM)
ZVM is a Windows service. More or less like vCenter. ZVM manages everything required for the replication between the protection and recovery sites but it doesn’t take part in replication.
The ZVM interacts with the vCenter Server to get the inventory of VMs, disks, networks, hosts, etc. This is presented via UI called as the Zerto GUI.
UI are made available in 3 different places (actual two if wish to forget C# client)
UI which is browser based
UI which gets in the form of plug-in for vSphere Client or vSphere Web Client
The ZVM monitors changes in the VMware environment and responds
For example, a VMotion operation of a protected VM from one host to another is intercepted by the ZVM so the Zerto GUI is updated accordingly.
ZVM must be installed per vCenter. vCenter might manage single site as shown below or it might manage multiple sites
For testing purpose you can install ZVM on vCenter.
When multiple vCenter is used to manage sites, ZVM must be installed per vCenter per site.
Zerto supports following network configuration
- Flat VLAN networks
- VLAN networks, including Private VLANS and stretched VLANs
- WAN emulation
- VPN IPsec
Zerto doesn’t support NAT firewalls.
Minimum bandwidth between site must be at least 5Mbps in order handle the data replication between the sites.
In below example we just need to install single ZVM as there is only one vCenter. vCenter in below example manages both the sites.
Zerto recommends installing ZVM on dedicated VM with HA enabled and no other application installed.
2. Virtual Replication Appliance (VRA)
VRA is packed into OVF and must be deployed on ESXi host to protect and recover VMs running on them. Replication is managed by VRAs. VRAs are deployed by ZVM on ESXi host
